The 2014 Year in NES Homebrew – 8-Bit Xmas 2014

This is what I’m going to release for my year in wrap-up. I’m going to list out all the notable NES Homebrew Games that were released this year, with a small summary about them. I will post up a new game every day or so. Let me know if I miss any!

Might as well start off with a yearly tradition for the NES homebrew enthusiast. 8-Bit Xmas has become something of a anomaly in the homebrew community, with the early versions becoming highly sought after. Traditionally, each game comes with a retro gaming themed pin-up Xmas Card and the option to put custom text on the title screen. Each cartridge has Xmas lights in it, which light up as you play. This year also had the option of a poster. The on-cartridge game each year is coded by a developer in the homebrew community, generally unnamed.

This year is a game called Killer Arcade Queen and it is the first ever 6-player NES game. While it sounds and looks cool, it might be the first time I have been let down from an 8-bit Xmas game since the first year that was essentially a Christmas Card only. The controls are weird, so I feel like I need to play this a bit more before I give a true judgement, however right now it’s a bit iffy.

Fortunately, there is also a few extra treats on this cartridge. If you have the Robot Operating Buddy handy, or multiple, you can have your own dance party in your house with 8-Bit Xmas tunes!
